Life often brings moments that remind us how delicate existence can be. The recent loss of my grandmother - Grammy - is one such moment. As I gather my thoughts to honor this extraordinary woman, it becomes clear that my sorrow goes beyond her passing; it is about the significant impact she had on my life. Her wisdom flowed through every conversation, her strength shone in her deeds, and her love surrounded me like a warm hug throughout my childhood and beyond.
To me, my grandmother was more than just a grandmother; she was a second mother. The lessons she taught were filled with fortitude and resilience, qualities I have always admired and sought to emulate. In this post, I want to share those precious moments and highlight how her memory continues to inspire me every day.
Cherished Childhood Memories
Being the daughter of a teen mom, I lived in my grandparent's home until I was seven years old, a safe haven filled with laughter and warmth. I remember her personal stories, relayed during relaxed afternoons, that shared invaluable lessons from her past. These anecdotes were not mere entertainment; they were rich in detail and wisdom, helping me understand the values of determination and gratitude.
I vividly remember our time together curled up reading stories, as she was an elementary school librarian for 25+ years with our local district. I remember her voice cascading up and down with the dialogue from each story and her soft hands as she turned the page carefully, showing the delicate pages care, just as she did with the people around her.
I remember those same hands gliding effortlessly across the keys of the organ at church each Sunday, and her comforting sway with the music. I always felt so honored when she would pat the bench beside her during mass, inviting me to hop up there with her where she allowed me to push the buttons to change the sounds and tones coming from the instrument. She taught me dedication and a love of music through those songs, through those hands.
Her Strength and Resilience
My grandmother encountered challenges that would have made many retreat. I remember when she faced her first stroke—her unwavering resolve to rally back was inspiring. She did not give up when so many would have, bringing herself back from a point of being unable to talk and walk properly to laughing, talking and driving again even.
After her second stroke and her heart attack, her spirit was still strong and fought for many years. This time, unfortunately, she was unable to get herself back to that point again, but she was able for many years to walk unassisted and to talk in fragmented sentences with us, letting us know that the same loving, compassionate and wise Grammy was in there, just partially silenced and trapped at times in her own mind. I asked her on a few occasions how she dealt with this, and her responses was always the same, "It is what it is." Wise words to live by, indeed.
When I allow it to, this philosophy has shaped my view in tough times. For example, when I've struggled with my mental health or had a particularly hard day with Eli, her voice echoed in my mind. Her strength and resilience has slowly became part of my identity, reminding me to keep pushing forward and search for new opportunities.
Wisdom Passed Down
The wisdom she imparted is a treasure I hold dear. I can still hear her gentle advice during our time together, calming me like a balm, as this woman who could barely speak and walk was telling me yet again, "It is what it is,"or "I'm fine, everything is fine." These conversations often provided clarity during moments of doubt or self-pity.
With her guidance, I built my self-confidence, enabling me to pursue my dreams. When I first faced public speaking in church, I recalled her encouraging words and felt emboldened to rise to the challenge. This kind of wisdom remains a guiding star, steering me through uncertain waters.
Adult Reflections
Entering adulthood, my grandmother's memories took on deeper significance. They became lifelines during my struggles. Whether facing setbacks in my career or personal life, the lessons from my childhood resurfaced at just the right moment.
For instance, during a particularly tough time with Eli, I thought of her strength. I was wallowing in sadness and despair feeling out of control. Then my mother reminded me of Grammy's wise words, "It is what it is,"and I could hear her voice comforting me, reminding me. Those words helped me move forward, allowing healing to take place.
On more than one occasion over the years, when life was stressful and I had what felt like a million balls in the air, I would look over at my Grammy, sitting there peacefully watching her latest show, and be in awe of everything she'd accomplished in life and all that she handled raising her own family; working full time, raising multiple children, doing all of the cooking, cleaning, house maintenance, volunteering constantly in the community and the church. She was incredible and would have run circles around me in her day! I would ask her how she did it, and she'd just shrug like it was no big deal, always humble. She was a true lady and example of what I have aspired to be as a wife and mother.
Emotional Farewell
Saying goodbye to my grandmother was incredibly difficult. The funeral felt surreal, as if I were trapped in a daydream. Surrounded by family, the atmosphere was charged with emotions—tears and laughter intertwined as we shared stories and honored her life.
I remember the lingering silence while the coffin was lowered into the ground. Standing there, I felt waves of memories crash over me—the scent of her perfume, her infectious laughter, and the warmth of her embrace. Though she is gone, her spirit lives on, reminding us of the boundless love she shared.
Her Legacy
Even though my grandmother has passed away, her legacy shines brightly within each of us. Every lesson and memory stands as a tribute to the matriarch she was. I'm committed to sharing her wisdom with my children and friends, ensuring her teachings continue to inspire.
As I navigate life without her physical presence, I reflect on her strength. She is now my guiding light, imparting wisdom that helps me face challenges. I commit to honor her memory in my actions, hoping to evoke positive change in others, just as she did in me.
Remembering Her Life and Lessons
In mourning Grammy, I also celebrate her life—the beauty, strength, and wisdom that she imparted. This journey has become a bittersweet reflection of what she meant to me and to our family. The void she left is vast, but the memories we created will resonate for years to come.
Every time I face life's challenges, I will carry her strength and wisdom with me. She may be at peace, but her spirit and teachings will forever illuminate my path. I am deeply grateful for the lessons she bestowed. Through her story, I have learned that while we may lose those we love, their essence remains with us. Their teachings guide us through life's unpredictable journey, reminding us of their enduring presence.
I love you, Grammy. You will truly be missed each and every day.
