From California to Florida: A First-Time Family Adventure Across the Country

Moving from California to Florida isn’t just a change of address—it was an adventure filled with chaos, excitement, and countless memories waiting to unfold. Our family embraced this spirit as we embarked on an unforgettable cross-country road trip that took us through some incredible states. From Arizona's unexpected cold front to enjoying the lush scenery of Alabama, we packed our lives into a Penske box truck with a car trailer attached that BJ drove with me traveling behind in our other vehicle and hit the road for the first time.

Preparing for the Journey

Before we even left, the planning stage felt like a three-month exercise in logistics. Packing, organizing, and learning how to drive a box truck with a trailer for the first time the day before we left was a big challenge. At times, I couldn’t believe how much stuff we managed to fit into a single truck, from furniture to toys and clothes.

I hadn’t driven longer than an hour and a half in over a decade! The idea of navigating across several states felt daunting yet thrilling. For BJ, he was taught by my dad the night before we left how to drive a box truck, and leaving the house the next morning feeling the pressure. His biggest takeaway? Knowing where your mirrors are is crucial and expect to have to slow it down!

The anticipation built as we stocked up on snacks, entertainment for the kids, and playlists that could rival any road trip classic. Emergency kits were packed, ensuring we were ready for anything.

The Great Escape: California to Arizona

The day we left California, excitement and nerves swirled within me. The first few hours were filled with snores from beside me as Kylia snoozed in the wee hours of the morning. But as we crossed into Arizona, I realized I was experiencing so much more than changing states.

Driving through Arizona was surreal. The vast deserts dotted with cacti felt like a scene from a movie. Yet, as the miles passed by, I felt the box truck loom over us. I worried about BJ fitting through tight spaces and navigating the winding roads, and questioned my own ability to drive this far each day. With each mile, my jitters eased, and a rhythm developed.

Our plan had been to stop in Williams for the night where we had a room booked so we could see the Grand Canyon on the way. Unfortunately, we discovered how much slower we were moving with that box truck and changed course, taking Highway 10 instead to take a much-needed break in a small town that none of us can even remember the name of at this point. We had driven sixteen and half hours that day and we were exhausted!!

New Mexico - Oh, the Adventures!

New Mexico welcomed us with its rich cultural heritage. As we entered the Land of Enchantment, we were mesmerized by Pueblo architecture and striking desert views. Learning from the day before, we limited stops, however, to try to push through the state to our next destination - El Paso, Texas.

The long stretches of driving began to wear on the kids, leading to many “How much longer?” questions. To lift our spirits, we had spontaneous walkie talkie conversations between vehicles, participated in singing contests, and played road games.

We actually arrived to our planned destination that night, but very late and very tired. We Door Dashed in some dinner then crashed. Unfortunately, a couple hours into our slumber we were awoken by the sound of my phone ringing. It was my mom, telling me that my grandmother, Grammy, had passed away. This saddened us all, but was not unexpected, as she had taken a downward turn over the past year.

Texas - Where the Long Roads Lie

As we rolled into Texas, the vastness was overwhelming. Driving for hours on straight roads while the kids napped was an experience in itself. The endless roads of nothingness were maddening.

Merging onto highways filled with speedy cars was still intimidating, but BJ became more comfortable with the massive truck. Taking breaks at roadside truck stops allowed us to stretch our legs and explore our surroundings, making the trip more of an adventure than a chore. One difference that both Kylia and I noted from California was the way women were treated. The men of Texas are true gentlemen, opening doors for us, calling us "ma'am", and tipping their hat politely. It was a refreshing change! :)

We did not make it that third night to our destination - Houston. Again, the endlessly slow hours exhausted us, and we had to drive much slower due to the high winds and deep crevices etched into that highway, making the truck want to fish-tail at points. BJ held that truck and trailed steady, however. Our night ended in San Antonio, where I literally started to have a panic attack on the freeway after another sixteen and a half hour day, exhausted and terrified due to the combination of construction work, large amounts of traffic, worry about BJ in the truck, and my own ability to navigate the roadways at that time of night with my eyes weary and tired. We survived, though, and have stories to remember and "laugh" at for years to come.

Let's just say that highway in Texas was NOT our favorite part of the trip. Sorry, Texas. LOL

Louisiana - A Culinary Delight

Upon entering Louisiana, I felt anticipation build. The landscape transformed into a lush paradise. The local culture was rich, and a change of pace from what we'd seen thus far on our trip. It was much needed.

Driving in a larger vehicle slowed us down just as much, however, as it had in the other states. The plan had been to stay overnight in New Orleans, but alas, we did not make it quite that far before we puttered out from yet another long and exhausting day. Instead, we stayed in Baton Rouge where we found the people to be kind and inviting. We again Door Dashed in to our hotel and let the flavors of the area satisfy our bellies.

Once filled, we again crashed for the night after a long day, filled with the anticipation of the coming day. Our destination tomorrow - our new home!!

Mississippi and Alabama - Hidden Gems

As we ventured through Mississippi and Alabama, we experienced the charm of the South. The lush scenery was breathtaking. The green that surrounded us during our drive filled my heart with joy.

We made our way effortlessly through each state, traffic and time on our side. We enjoyed music and laughs as we continued on our journey, traveling along steadily to our next destination, stopping only for lunch and gas along the way. We were determined to make it to our new state today!

Finally: Welcome to the Free State of Florida!

The final stretch to Florida was filled with excitement. The coastal air welcomed us as we approached our new home. Watching California fade from view stirred mixed emotions, but the thought of a new beginning invigorated my spirit.

After an exhausting yet joyful journey, we finally arrived in Florida. The experience of driving that Penske box truck with a car trailer wasn’t as terrifying as BJ had feared, with only two minor moments of nervousness along our trip. Each mile taught us something new about geography, family bonding, and shared laughter.

Reflections on Our Journey

Reflecting on our trip, I can confidently say that moving across the country with my family in a box truck was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We turned fears into excitement, and challenges only strengthened our bond.

If you're planning a similar adventure, here’s a helpful family checklist:

  • Allow Time for the Unexpected: Even with the best of intentions, things can go sideways with traffic. Learn from our mistakes and don't try to fit too much into one day.

  • Plan for Frequent Stops: Discover local attractions and unique eateries along the way... and try to coordinate bathroom breaks with gassing up. :)

  • Entertainment is Key: Mix music, dancing, and games to keep everyone engaged.

In the end, this journey was more than just a move; it was about growth, exploration, and togetherness. As we begin this new chapter in Florida, we eagerly look forward to creating new memories that will inspire future adventures.

So, if you're considering a family road trip or moving across the country, I hope our story inspires you to embrace the wild ride. Safe travels!
